I believe Terry McAuley was announced as head referee for the SB. Do they continue to work in crews for the Super Bowl, or does it become an All-Star crew for the Super Bowl?

If it's his entire crew, does anyone know if they call a lot of penalties?

Could the crew style affect either team more than the other?

Isn't going to change my opinion on the game, but figured I'd throw it out there.

I am sorry for using the "R" word - and NOTHING EL

it could be his entire crew - but odds are it won't.

to work a super bowl the official needs to have been one for at least 5 years

if not - he is replaced

last year when ed hochuli's crew did the game there were a few on his crew who didn't have 5 years - and we replaced by officials from other crews

Hey Guys..

Personally each time I see that Phil Luckett and his crew is officiating a game I stay far far away...Remember the phantom TD by Vinny Testaverde against Seattle which gave the Jets the win over Seattle and caused the Seahawks to miss the playoffs as well as costing HC Dennis Erickson his job?...that was Phil Luckett.

Remember the infamous blown coin toss call in OT on Thanksgiving day when Pittsburgh visted Detroit?

Steeler RB Jerome Bettis called "Tails" only to have Mr Phil Luckett tell Bettis that he called heads....Bettis was clearly heard to say "Tails" on audio replay.

Remember the "Music City Miracle" when Buffalo got screwed over with alot of phantom calls which kept the Titans in the game and then the controversial play at the games end?....that was another Phil Luckett job.

Three big rulings by the officials, led to three straight huge breaks for the Titans in the last two minutes of the first half.

Firstly there was the Price catch that was ruled incomplete which nuffed out a Buffalo drive, then the McNair dive for the first down that was reviewed and given to the Titans, and then the phantom holding call on the Buffalo defense that gift wrapped three more points for Tenny before the half ended.

Phil Luckett and his crew did everything they could to screw the Bills but with 20 seconds left in the game Buffalo kicked a FG to take a 16-15 lead.

Titan Frank Wycheck fielded Buffalo's kickoff at the 25 yard line, stopped and lateraled to Kevin Dyson who in turn ran down the field untouched to the endzone and the game was over.

The play was reviewed by Luckett's crew and ruled to be a legal lateral, that play is still one of the most controversial calls ever and will probably still be talked about 50 years from today.

We as handicappers need review each losing wager as a means to learn from our mistakes and what I've learned is to check who is on the officiating staff prior to wagering on the game....if Luckett is involved in the game STAY AWAY!!

take care and good luck!

Pops: I was thinking of keeping these stats next season. I was sure that certain crews would be involved in higher/lower scoring games than others. I was very suprised to read your post.

Did you come up with an average points scored per game with each crew?

I would really be interested if you could post a little of what stats you kept for each crew.

8 mb file

i have a 8mb through week #8 nfl file handy. if you have an email account that will accept one that large email me. it has at least 1 pivot table, they work very well if you know how to use them. it's also setup with col filters as well. just email me at jrydel@go.com and put nfl in the subject and i'll email it to you if you want it

Pops: I am not computer literate enough to open that file. Half the things you mentioned I never even heard of. (pivot table, col filters) so I'll just have to take your word for it. Thanks anyway.

Deb: If you were betting the other side of those bad calls you would have liked them very much. That's why I never worry about an incompetant ref. His bad calls can go either way.

I don't think you can use stats on the crews to pick the side for a game, but I really feel that they can be a good tool for handicapping the totals.

Pops: One more question. Did you run stats to compare the total points scored in each game that each crew refereed against the closing line for the game's total?

Hello ESQAJM...

The point I was trying to make is that Phil Luckett and his crew have been involved in some of the most BIZARRE and mind-boggling WORST calls in the history of the game...and that I find quite odd.

take care and good luck!
